Elderberries

Pick-your-own elderberries

We planted our first elderberry bush back in 2014 after learning about the amazing health benefits of this tiny berry.

During a particular rough bout with the flu, I bought my first bottle of elderberry syrup from the health food store to help our youngest beat the virus. I left the store with a tiny 4 oz. bottle, fifteen bucks lighter, and a whole lot wiser.

I've made my own elderberry syrup ever since and am determined to help provide a way to get elderberry syrup in as many homes as possible without breaking the bank.

The Mother Bush of all
JUBILEE ELDERBERRIES

Elderberry bushes grown from seed are an unreliable way to copy characteristics from the parent plant since pollination can't be controlled. While our Mother bush was grown from a seed, all the other elderberry bushes on the homestead are clones of this bush, propagated through either cuttings or shoots that spread underground. This is how we are assured that our new bushes will have the same high production and great attributes of the Mother bush. In the spring of 2023, we finally cut down the Mother bush, leaving a full field to carry on its blessing.

In 2020, We Planted 120
ELDERBERRY CUTTINGS/SHOOTS

Our goal was to grow enough to let people come and pick their own elderberries. Some of our new bushes took off amazingly well, some didn't survive the first year. Thankfully, the Mother Bush kept sending out shoots to replace any that were lost.

Our Grass Management:
WHITE CHINESE GEESE

Geese live on a diet of 100% grass. They don't typically like broad leafed plants (except dandelions) and leave the elderberry bushes alone. Finding the right balance of geese to grass is a fluctuating process depending on the ages of our geese and the amount of rain we get, but with their help, we only have to mow the elderberry field a couple times a year.

Our Faithful Pair of Geese
EXPANDED THEIR FAMILY IN 2022

We only kept a pair of geese over the winter in 2020, hoping they would hatch their own family to help with the mowing in the spring. Inexperience prevailed and the pair remained alone. Not willing to only depend on her again, we bought 8 goslings in 2022 to help with the mowing. Mama Goose was successful, however. She added 4 more to the family and adopted the "imported goslings" without hesitation!

ELDERFLOWERS

Our elderberry bushes start blooming the very end of June into the first few weeks of July. The aisles in full bloom provide beautiful photo backdrops and fill the air with their faint scent, promising the bountiful harvest to come.
